Milo is a very cute puppy with separation anxiety and a LOT of energy in Centreville, VA. His owners asked me for dog training help because he isn’t the typical puppy. He has a lot of trouble calming down and suffers from terrible separation anxiety – howling for hours when they leave. The interesting thing is that he suffered from separation anxiety from the very first moment they brought him home.
When he was around 4 weeks of age, Milo was found with his siblings on the side of the road in a bag, obviously abandoned.
When removed from their mother before 8 weeks of age (at the least) it can cause HUGE problems for dogs. Issues that the dog will suffer from for the rest of its life.
We got lucky. Milo was a huge challenge the first lesson and I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to help him. I had his owners make a few small changes and they were able to leave without him following them to the door. We watched on a camera and Milo didn’t freak out and eventually laid down on his own.
We then went for a really great walk. He is still young and distractible but was mostly walking on a loose leash. It shows that his parents have committed to helping him. More importantly, they did their homework!
Milo may always have a few issues due to his rough start, but he’s on his way to being as relaxed as he is happy and handsome.
